Still no 'Best Casting By' award at the Academy Awards

Why don't casting directors have a category for "Best Casting By" at the Academy Awards? To comprehend this issue, you have to have a deep understanding of how the casting process works. Casting directors are contracted by production companies and/or studios to cast specific projects. The casting directors (and their associate casting directors and assistants) filter through massive amounts of submissions for specific roles, mainly through talent agents. The casting directors then audition actors for the specific roles being cast. They then choose what actors that they personally deem "right for the role", at their discretion, and they subsequently advance those actors to a "call back", to audition for the director, writer(s), producers, and for major roles.. the studio executives. Eventually, the right actor for the role is hired. The actor is not hired directly by the casting director, but rather the director/production company/studio. Other than for small speaking roles on TV series, the casting director does not have the ability to hire actors, they simply select a certain group of actors to advance in the casting process. I am not talking about extras. Extras are cast directly by Extras Casting Directors/Companies. For there to be an Academy Award category for principal actor casting directors, the voting members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences would have to be able to see all of the hundreds (and even thousands) of actor's auditions for each role by the "Best Casting By" nominee, to be able to judge whether or not each casting director nominee did the best job. And just to narrow down the casting nominees, there would have to be a massive amount of that material available to the Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences nominating committee. That is a logistical impossibility. Directors, producers, writers, and studio executives have the final say in who is cast in specific roles, not casting directors. The best casting directors do a great job, and they have a great collaboration with those who do hire the actors, however there is no definitive way to establish a criteria for an Academy Award category for "Best Casting By". I can elaborate much more about the casting process, however that would require much more than I can post here, it would be a complete eBook. I do want to elaborate about why casting directors are never credited in films as a Casting "Director", but rather credited as "Casting By". The Directors Guild of America does not allow, by contract, any other persons on a film being credited with the word "Director", unless they are actually a "director" i.e. 1st AD (First Assistant Director, etc). That includes the Cinematographer (widely called "DP" or "Director of Photography" on the set). Casting directors are some of the hardest working people in the entertainment industry, but there you go, that is why there is no Oscar Award category for "Best Casting By".

'Pretty Little Liars' now casting actors and extras for ABC Family's fourth season

ABC Family Casting Pretty Little Liars Season 4

"Pretty Little Liars" fourth season starts shooting March 15, 2013.
AB Media Publishing, LLC

Horizon Scripted Television and Alloy Entertainment are set to begin production on the fourth season of ABC Family's hugely popular teen drama mystery thriller one-hour single-camera television series "Pretty Little Liars". Primetime Emmy Award nominated casting director Bonnie Zane and two-time Casting Society of America Artios Award nominee Gayle Pillsbury are casting actors for guest starring, recurring, and day player roles. Extras are being cast throughout the season. The network has ordered 24 episodes that will shoot beginning on March 15, 2013. The story is set in the fictitious town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania but shoots in Los Angeles. The first season of "Pretty Little Liars" premiered on June 8, 2010 becoming ABC Family's highest-rated series debut on record. The show airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c.

"Pretty Little Liars" follows the lives of four teenage girls - Aria Montgomery, Emily Fields, Hanna Marin, and Spencer Hastings - whose clique falls apart after the disappearance of their queen bee, Alison DiLaurentis. One year later they begin receiving messages from a mysterious figure using the name "A" who threatens to expose their secrets. At first they think it's Alison herself, but after she is found dead, the girls realize that someone else knows their secrets. Turns out that "A" is actually more than one person working in tandem against the Liars. Mona Vanderwaal was the primary A during the first two seasons, and Toby Cavanaugh was revealed to be part of A's team in season three.

Starring in "Pretty Little Liars" is Teen Choice Awards winner Troian Bellisario playing the role of Spencer Hastings, the "smart girl" of the group; Ashley Benson portrays Hanna Marin, the "It girl" of the group; Shay Mitchell plays the role of Emily Fields, the "jock girl" of the group; and four-time Teen Choice Awards winner Lucy Hale plays Aria Montgomery, the "artsy girl" of the group. All four actresses won the Young Hollywood Awards in 2011 for the category of Cast To Watch. Actress and singer Sasha Pieterse plays the role of Alison DiLaurentis, the former queen bee who was killed a year prior to the beginning of the series. Pieterse makes appearances on the show in the form of flashbacks, dreams and hallucinations.

The show is based on a series of young adult novels by Sara Shepard that are "loosely based on her experiences growing up on Philadelphia's Main Line". Twelve books have been released so far, and "Crushed," the next book in the series, has a release date of June 4, 2013 followed by "Deadly," which is scheduled to be released December 3, 2013. Two companion books, "Pretty Little Secrets" and "Ali's Pretty Little Lies" have also been released. Sara Shepard has been writing for many years, and when she was young, one of the things she wanted to be when she grew up was a soap opera star.

Aside from developing the series, the amazingly talented and beautiful I. Marlene King serves as executive producer, head writer and showrunner on "Pretty Little Liars". She also directs episodes and recently Tweeted, "Panicked when I realized I'll b directing 401 when finale airs. Hey @lisacochranpll can we get a TV on at video village?! Pretty please". Video Village is a term that refers to an area around the monitor on set where the director sits during shooting, and since so many people gather around this monitor, the term "Village" was coined. 401 refers to season 4, episode 1. The season 3 finale episode (script #324) of "Pretty Little Liars" airs on the same day that I. Marlene King will be directing the first episode of season 4, which will be a typical 15 hour day. Of course King can record it and watch the finale' after work, but it isn't the same. You have to be a director to understand and relate to how important it is to watch your work air "live". Unless of course you are Eric Stoltz (director - Glee), who once said as an actor, "I don't even own a TV". But Eric is an extreme exception to the rule, unless he changed his tune after transitioning from actor to director. Leslie Morgenstein executive produces for Alloy Entertainment. Primetime Emmy Award nominee Oliver Goldstick also executive produces. Lisa Cochran-Neilan, Joshua Bank, Bryan M. Holdman are the show's producers.

Acting auditions and extras casting for ABC series pilot 'Trophy Wife'

"Trophy Wife" is casting actors in both Los Angeles and New York.
AB Media Publishing, LLC

ABC Studios is getting set to begin shooting a new single-camera 1/2 hour comedy series pilot titled "Trophy Wife". Casting directors in New York and Los Angeles are auditioning talent for a variety of roles, including series regulars, co-starring, guest starring, possible recurring, and day player roles. In addition to the principal actor roles being cast, many extras will be hired throughout the shoot which will take place beginning December 3rd in Los Angeles. There are speaking and non-speaking roles for teens and adults.

The show centers on Kate, a 27 year old free-spirited wild child gal. Her life is turned upside down when she falls in love with and marries an affluent businessman named Brad Harrison, who is 20 years her senior. Turns out Brad has several children from previous marriages - 15 year old fraternal twins Hillary and Nelson, and 7 year old Bert. In addition, Brad has two ex-wives, Diane and Jacky. Dianne is an accomplished intimidating woman, a former Olympic swimmer who is now an orthopedic surgeon who thinks that Kate is a result of Brad's mid-life crisis. Jacky is a good-natured yet self centered woman who is always surprised when her freewheeling style rubs people the wrong way. And then there is Meg, Kate's hard-partying, cheerfully promiscuous younger sister who is a little jealous of Kate's new family.

Starring in "Trophy Wife" is Teen Choice Award nominated Swedish Canadian actress, model and singer Malin Ă…kerman as Kate. Earlier this year Ă…kerman was cast in another ABC comedy pilot "The Smart One". Also starring is three-time Golden Globe Award nominee Bradley Whitford as Brad Harrison; Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden as Brad's ex-wife Dianne; Saturday Night Live alum Michaela Watkins as Brad's other ex-wife Jackie; and Gianna LePera as Brad's daughter Hillary. Malin Ă…kerman and Bradley Whitford previously worked together on the Tom Cruise film "Rock of Ages", where Ă…kerman played Debbie Harry and Whitford played Nicky Gant.

Jason Moore will direct the pilot episode of "Trophy Wife" from a teleplay written by Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern. Moore has directed episodes of the television shows "Brothers & Sisters," "Dawson's Creek," "One Tree Hill," and "Everwood". He directed the Universal Pictures Peoples Choice Award nominated film "Pitch Perfect" starring Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow. In addition to film and television, Moore was nominated for a Tony Award for directing the Broadway musical "Avenue Q". He also directed the Broadway plays "Steel Magnolias" and "Shrek the Musical".

Producing is Dan Kaplow, who began his career with Dick Clark Productions, working on American Bandstand. His television producing credits include "The Sopranos," "United States of Tara," and "The Mindy Project". Kaplow is also currently producing the HBO series "Hello Ladies". In addition to writing the teleplay, Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern will also executive produce along with four-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Lee Eisenberg, and three-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Gene Stupnitsky.

Auditions and casting calls for ABC Family series pilot 'Phys Ed'

ABC Family Phys Ed Auditions Casting Calls

"Phys Ed" is one of five new pilots that are in production for ABC Family.
AB Media Publishing, LLC

Prodco is in pre-production on a new comedy series pilot for ABC Family called "Phys Ed", and auditions are taking place for series regulars, guest stars, and day players. Extras will be cast throughout production which begins in November, 2012. Roles for teachers, parents, and students are being cast in Los Angeles, with some additional casting done in New York. Especially needed are people 18 and older who can play high school age to work as extras on the show. Shooting will take place in Los Angeles.

"Phys Ed" is a half-hour multi-camera comedy series, although the pilot episode will be one-hour long. The show centers on Ed Spector, played by Ryan Sypek. Ed was a popular high school jock who returns as an adult to teach Physical Education at his former high school, and ends up somehow becoming intimate with fellow teacher Janie Macallister, played by Kate Lang Johnson. Turns out Janie is Ed's former Nathan Hale High School classmate whom he ignored, but is now drop dead gorgeous. Although Ed has matured and become a very nice responsible man, he soon discovers that the same cannot be said for some of the other faculty members. The history teacher Alan Rappaport is a pretentious jerk, along with his airheaded large busted hot sidekick Cheer Coach Wendy Kleinman.

Former actor Ted Wass will direct the pilot episode of "Phys Ed". Wass previously directed episodes of the ABC Family shows "State of Georgia" and "Melissa & Joey". Other notable episodic television directing credits include Disney Channel's "Smart Guy," "Caroline in the City," "Spin City," "Less Than Perfect," "The Big Bang Theory," "Two and a Half Men," and "Rules of Engagement" among many others. Wass is a graduate of DePaul University's Goodman School of Drama, and made his Broadway acting debut in "Grease" playing Danny Zuko in 1976. He then played Danny Dallas on the series "Soap" from 1977–1981, and Nick Russo on the sitcom "Blossom" from 1991–1995 among many other shows. After Blossom ended in 1995, Wass retired from acting and has focused only on directing episodic television.

David H. Steinberg wrote the pilot episode of "Phys Ed". Steinberg lives in Santa Monica, CA, with his wife producer Keetgi Kogan. The couple have collaborated on several projects including the films "Barely Legal" starring Amy Smart and Tom Arnold, and the upcoming "Miss Dial" which was also produced by Cast It Talent founder Eric Hayes. Keetgi Kogan is additionally a writer, and has written a screenplay called "What About Barb" that will be released by Universal Pictures. Both Steinberg and Kogan attended the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC.

The production company behind "Phys Ed" is called Prodco, Inc. Prodco's president is Don Mink, who is also co-founder of the Disney-ABC Television Group owned subsidiary production company It's a Laugh Productions. That company has produced such Disney Channel shows as "Hannah Montana," "Lab Rats," "Pair of Kings," "A.N.T. Farm," "Wizards of Waverly Place," "The Suite Life on Deck" "Dog with a Blog," and "Jessie" among many others. In addition to "Phys Ed", Prodco is also producing four other ABC Family pilots in pre-production.

ABC Family casting calls for Jennifer Lopez produced series 'The Fosters'

ABC Family Auditions The Fosters

"The Fosters" begins shooting in Late October, 2012.
AB Media Publishing, LLC

Blazing Elm Entertainment and Prodco in association with Nuyorican Productions are nearing the start of shooting on the ABC Family drama series pilot "The Fosters". Auditions are taking place in Los Angeles and New York for series regulars, guest starring, possible recurring, and day player roles. All of the show's extras will be cast in Los Angeles throughout the shoot, beginning in late October, 2012. Especially needed will be talent who are 18 years of age and above, or legally emancipated, who can portray high school students. The production office is located at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood, CA.

The show centers on a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms. Lena and Stef Foster, a mixed race lesbian couple, have enough love to spare for both Stef's biological son, Brandon, as well as Jesus and Marianne, whom they adopted out of the foster system. But when Lena opens her heart and their home, once again, to Callie Jacob, a troubled teen fresh out of a youth detention center, the Foster family is in for a painful but ultimately rewarding period of adjustment.

Starring in "The Fosters" is two-time Screen Actors Guild Award nominee Teri Polo of "Meet the Parents" fame as police officer Stef Foster, wife of Lena, adoptive parent to two twin teens, and biological parent to a son; two-time Daytime Emmy Award nominee Sherri Saum as Lena Foster, Stef's wife and benevolent school principal who takes in pugnacious teen foster child Callie; Maia Mitchell of Disney Channel's "Teen Beach Musical" plays the juvenile delinquent Callie; David Lambert of Disney Channel's "Aaron Stone" and "Den Brother" is playing Stef's biological son Brandon.

Primetime Emmy winner Timothy Busfield will direct the pilot episode from a teleplay written by Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg. Busfield's Emmy came from his acting role as Elliot Weston on the ABC hit series "thirtysomething". He has worked on countless film and television productions as actor, director, and executive producer. Broadway credits include "A Few Good Men". With elder brother Buck Busfield, he is co-founder of the B Street Theatre in Sacramento, California, where he has appeared in and directed numerous contemporary works.

Executive producing "The Fosters" is Jennifer Lopez and Simon Fields under the banner of Lopez' company Nuyorican Productions. Also executive producing are the shows writers/creators Peter Paige and Brad Bredeweg of Blazing Elm Entertainment, while Prodco is producing for ABC Family. Prodco's president is Don Mink, who is also co-founder of the Disney-ABC Television Group owned subsidiary production company It's a Laugh Productions. That company has produced such Disney Channel shows as "Lab Rats," "Pair of Kings," "A.N.T. Farm," "Wizards of Waverly Place," "The Suite Life on Deck" and "Dog with a Blog," among many others. New ABC Family series 'Socio' casting calls in Los Angeles and New York

ABC Family Socio Casting Calls

The "Socio" pilot is executive produced by 8-time Emmy Award nominee Gavin Polone.
AB Media Publishing, LLC

The production company Pariah in association with Prodco are ready to begin shooting a new pilot for ABC Family titled "Socio". The casting directors in Los Angeles and New York are auditioning actors for starring, guest-starring, recurring roles, and day players. Extras will be hired throughout production beginning late October, 2012. The production office for the show is located at the EUE/Screen Gems Studios in New York City. "Socio" is one of five new pilots that are in production for the network. The others are "The Fosters," "Terminales," "Phys Ed," and "Continuing Fred."

"Socio" centers on a charismatic sixteen-year-old alleged sociopath, who recently reconnected with his two female best friends from childhood, and who becomes the prime suspect when a fellow student is murdered. Danny Ryder, who murdered his own aunt five years ago, returns to his home town after being released from custody - a controversial homecoming that causes a media firestorm. Admittedly guilty, Danny, nicknamed "Socio" by the hostile high school crowd he will be attending school with, claims that he had a reason for the murder - but what that reason is he has stubbornly refused to divulge.

Starring in "Socio" is Canadian actor Avan Jogia in the role of Danny Ryder, the teen who returns to town after being locked up for five years after killing his aunt; Denise Richards plays Danny's mother Karen, who harbors secrets of her own; Maddie Hasson portrays Jo Masterson, Danny's former best friend; Kimberly Quinn is Jo's mother Tess, who gives Danny the benefit of doubt and is tolerant of him wanting to be friends with Jo again; Kylie Bunbury has been cast as Danny's other former best friend, now a popular girl who wants to rid herself of her harrowing past.

The talented Adam Milch wrote the pilot for "Socio" and will co-executive produce with eight-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Gavin Polone of the production company Pariah. Prodco will produce along with Pariah's Lauren Pfeiffer. Prodco's president is Don Mink, who is also co-founder of the Disney-ABC Television Group owned subsidiary production company It's a Laugh Productions. That company has produced such Disney Channel shows as "Hannah Montana," "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody," "Jonas," "Jessie," "Shake It Up!", "Austin & Ally," and "Dog with a Blog," among many others. In addition to "Socio", Prodco is also producing the other four ABC Family pilots in pre-production.

When the two families meet, the girls struggle with their identities as Bay relates to the artistic abilities of Daphne's mother, and Daphne is drawn to the athletic skills of Bay's father, as well as the family's friendly demeanor. The Kennishes learn that Daphne and her mom are facing financial woes and propose the Vasquezes move into their guest home. The new living situation forces the girls, along with both families, to understand their differences and embrace their similarities.

The cast includes Teen Choice Award nominee Vanessa Marano returning as Bay Kennish; Teen Choice Award nominee Katie Leclerc as Daphne Vasquez; Teen Choice Award nominee Lucas Grabeel is back as Bay's brother Toby Kennish; Screen Actors Guild Award winner D.W. ABC Family is now in production on a new ballet drama series called "Bunheads", and the casting directors are auditioning actors for co-starring, guest starring, and day player roles. Extas and stand-ins are also being cast throughout the season. The show centers on a Las Vegas showgirl who impulsively marries a man named Hubble Flower and moves to his sleepy coastal town of Paradise, California after he passes away. She inherits his house, his mother Fanny Flowers along with her dance studio and students.

Headlining the series is the extremely beautiful and talented Tony Award winning actress, singer, and dancer Sutton Foster in the role of Michelle. There was a national talent search that took place, as the producers sought a variety of teen girls with strong Ballet experience. They wanted girls who are 18 and above who can play 14 - 17 years of age, or girls under 18 who are emancipated. They found dancer Bailey Buntain in New York City; Yuri Grigoriev School of Ballet trained Jenny-Lyn Marais in Los Angeles; Emma Dumont dances at Los Angeles Ballet Academy; Julia Goldani-Telles also in New York City; and newcomer Kaitlyn Jenkins from Orange County High School of the Arts in Santa Ana, California. Kelly Bishop ("Gilmore Girls") plays Fanny Flowers.

Primetime Emmy nominated Amy Sherman-Palladino directed the pilot episode from a screenplay that she wrote herself. About "Bunheads", Sherman-Palladino said, "I spent 20 years of my life with my hair in a bun. I was supposed to be a dancer. My mother was a dancer. Her greatest heartbreak was when I got on Roseanne. So, while writing this will never equal playing "Rumpelteazer" in a bus and truck tour of Cats, it does let me tip my hat to a really special time in my life." The project was originally picked up as a cast-contingent pilot last fall with writer Lamar Damon. Sherman-Palladino is executive producing "Bunheads". Sherman-Palladino is best known as creator, executive producer, head writer, and director of the popular WB Television Network series "Gilmore Girls". Her husband, Daniel Palladino, is also writing and directing episodes of "Bunheads".

Update: On October 4, 2012, ABC Family renewed  "Pretty Little Liars" for a fourth season.

The third season of ABC Family's hugely popular teen drama mystery thriller television series "Pretty Little Liars" is now underway. The show's casting directors are auditioning actors for guest starring and day player roles, as well as hiring extras and stand-ins. The network has ordered 24 episodes that will shoot through October, 2012. The story is set in the fictitious town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania but shoots in Los Angeles. "Pretty Little Liars" premiered on June 8, 2010 becoming ABC Family's highest-rated series debut on record.

"Pretty Little Liars" follows the lives of four teenage girls - Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale), Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell), Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson), and Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) - whose clique falls apart after the disappearance of their leader, Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse), until her body is found, and they join together again at her funeral - where they immediately begin receiving text messages from an anonymous source, "A", who threatens to expose their secrets — including long-hidden ones they thought only their close friend Alison knew. As the show continues, they are plagued by "A's" cruel schemes, ranging from worms instead of Chinese food, to vicious attempts on their lives.

The show is based on a series of young adult novels by Sara Shepard that are "loosely based on her experiences growing up on Philadelphia's Main Line". Ten books have been released so far, and "Stunning," the next book in the series, has a release date of June 5, 2012. A twelfth and final book, "Burned," is scheduled to be released December 4, 2012. A companion book, "Pretty Little Secrets," was released on January 3, 2012. The book is set during the winter holidays between the books "Unbelievable" and "Wicked". Sara Shepard has been writing for many years, and when she was young, one of the things she wanted to be when she grew up was a soap opera star.
